Thanks to all for the advice.
What I was seeing was complete gobbledy-gook, not readable text interspersed with unreadable text. It was the same in Notepad, Wordpad, Word, and Homesite. I don't have Textpad, but I may get it, though I am very used to Homesite, and I like it.
The technique that worked was to view the source, do a select all, cut and paste into the editor of my choice.
