I was thinking something similar, that it would be better to strip the tag info in the db, but the problem may go deeper.
Based on very little info, I'd suspect the db isn't optimized. It should be pretty straight forward to be able to manage the presentation of the data in each field at the field level. If someone feels the need to add markup to the data within a field, it usually means they're trying to visually break out data that probably should be in a separate field.
