I must say I use DW MX2004 to edit CSS all the time, mainly because it has excellent code hints. I always delete that initial comment when DW makes a new CSS file, but that doesn't mean it has no relevance to crashing. (I haven't discerned any pattern to when DW crashes on me, but I'll be alert to the possibility now.) I also use JEdit quite a bit, and there is a plugin which gives quite good CSS support (but no code hints).
