You are absolutely right, and I agree with you in this matter: there's
nothing wrong with one wrapper div in the html. Or some, if they are
really needed. Off course - if possible - there's also nothing wrong
with leaving out a div if that div isn't necessary. That's the point
of the questions here.

Maybe the way I stated my reply wasn't very clear. I was not
recommending anybody to omit an additional wrapper div. I gave the
examples in hope that some of the members of this list, with more
experience in this specific issue, would know if there are any
problems when omitting the wrapper div. So basically it was more of a
question on my side too.

As your examples show, there seem to be some rather serious problems
in IE 5.5,  IE 6 quirks and opera. (I can confirm the problems you
found)

Thanks a lot for showing us these test-cases. Shame on me for being
too lazy to set them up myself ;)....
