I'd swear I tried something similar to this, but that definitely
works for me. I'm very grateful to you for finding the solution.
I think the difference between your markup and the ones I tried had
to do with the specificity of this instruction. For some reason I
thought one needed to list the background-position changes with each
defined hover, and that doesn't work. I'm delighted that adding this
at a higher level element works well.
