I wouldn't quite call it a hack; it's not exploiting any browser problems like the "* html" hack. It's just making use of normal specificity rules from the CSS spec: http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS21/cascade.html#specificity Specificity is a great tool I use constantly in my work.
