The mystery deepens. If you're on a slow-ish connection (x<512k), you'll 
notice that the border is present - i.e. - not broken before the images 
load.

Resizing the text leads to the left-hand nav elements overlapping the 
border, and causing it to "break up". Perhaps a similiar thing is 
happening with the thumbnails? An increased margin/padding perhaps?
