a, I can't remember what I did.
b, I do my CSS my gut instinct - I have no idea why something
works half the time, it's just that I have been doing it so long
that I can make stuff work ;-)

IIRC all your CSS problems where related to the differing way IE computes
the box model (as opposed to all other major browsers)

I figured it might - IIRC Opera computes the box-model in the same way
as Firefox (et al) ... in the 'correct' way.
