That's a good point, but I'm looking for something more.  I personally
never use the Home key because it depends on the keyboard (e.g. on Mac
laptops you'd need two hands) and even worse, it depends on focus.  If
you're focused on the address bar or a text-entry field, Home/End
won't (always) scroll the page.

Using the scrollbar is a good idea, and can even be Fitt's compliant. 
That said, good design is in part about meeting users' expectations
for common UI elements, and "go to top" widgets on some long pages are
common enough to almost be considered expected.

So we can rephrase the question as, "If you're going to implement 'Go
to top' links at all, what's the recommended way of doing it?"
