It all depends on the context, of course. In your example, multiple
images in one row, the {vertical-align:bottom;} makes more sense.
With img {display:block}, the images would wrap each on a new line –
the expected behaviour. Otherwise useful if the image is the only
descendant of a table-cell or a floated block, or an inline-block.
