Thanks Els. I have been able to get it closer to what I wanted in IE. 
The problem was not the thumbnails. The solution was /major surgery/ of 
the containing structural layout. I had a 3 column layout that contained 
another mini 3 column layout. I now have a single column layout 
containing a mini 3 col layout. Everyone, including me and IE, seem more 
comfortable with this simple version.
