Your xhtml prologue:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

...causes IE to go into quirks mode and render widths incorrectly. 
While it is perfectly legal to use it it's bad effect on IE and the
fact that no other browser needs it to go into "standards" mode means
best practice currently is to leave it out.

You have a number of errors in your xhtml which you should clean up.
