As usual, the effect of your dark css horror show inside is a bright and 
peaceful page in all my browsers.
That was the com(pli)ment. :-)

Now the suggestion.
There are people who like to ... shrink the font size. Then they see the 
<h3>Gems - Diamonds, and Precious Gems</h3> walking upwards over the 
div#column-a { background: url(images/manuscript.gif) 0% 5em no-repeat; }.
A solution can be: to remove the bg-img from the div#column-a, and to 
anchor it in the:
=====
div#column-a h2 {
   padding-bottom: .5em;
   background:
   url(images/manuscript.gif) 0 100% no-repeat;}
=====
REM: Only at shrinking 4 steps or more (FF), the bg-img will be cut off 
on the upper side.
