Why not use a background image? Also, when you say you don't want it to work in IE, just modern browsers, you have just lost most of your audience. IE6/7 is a modern browser, it's just problematic in its css support (proprietary box model etc). So unless your site is going to be viewed only by Firefox users or is for your own use, you have to make it work in IE, after coding it for Mozilla.
