New experiment: here is another altenative, with small images, and 
font-scaling proof:
http://home.tiscali.nl/developerscorner/css-discuss/test-brian.htm
(fixed width version), and also:
http://home.tiscali.nl/developerscorner/css-discuss/test-brian2.htm
(flexible width version).

With small images for borders you've to be pretty carefull too: 
reasonable amount of fine tuning styles needed! ;-)
