It turns out that this is a know firefox bug and is not going to be fixed till firefox 2.1
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=167801 I firstr tried one workaround by replacing overflow:auto with: overflow-x: auto; overflow-y: auto That did not work. I then tried another workaround by replacing: position: absolute; with: position:fixed; position:expression("absolute"); This seems to work with no major changes in my website.
