Ok, did all that, even took it to the most basic:
    body {
        background-color: red;
        background-image: url(yel.jpg); 
        background-repeat: no-repeat;

    }

Yel.jpg is a 20x100 image, I end up with a 100% yellow page, which the image
is made of yellow. Yet I have no repeat set, so making even less sense
