Thanks Ian,

I will have a look. I am currently using Son of Suckerfish for the 
navigation so I have the small sfHover.js script that triggers the drop 
downs in IE. As far as the HTML that does not validate, this is due to 
the newsletter component in Joomla. It generates a whole bunch of 
invalid code.
