Not sure what's already been suggested, but I have this, which is
working

<tr>... </tr>
<tr class="alternate"> ... </tr>

td {background-color: #FFF; }
tr.alternate td {background-color: #eee;}

Already tried that -I can do it in php, but want a css solution.
