You can for instance use the '+' selector[1], and I also think the <th>
element has a place in those tables.
The following works fine in CSS-capable browsers...
td {text-align: left;}
td+td {text-align: center;}
td+td+td+td+td+td+td+td+td+td {text-align: left;}
td+td+td+td+td+td+td+td+td+td+td {text-align: center;}
tr.headerrow td, th {text-align: center;}
...and you can add in the width-values, and whatever, the same way.
At least one of the less capable browsers can't follow, and need the
following just to get by...
* html td {text-align: center;}
...so in reality your CSS options may be limited to what you've got now
- for now.
