Word 2007 also uses Word as a rendering engine.

Yes. And don't trust styles in the head of the document to be read or 
used by all HTML mail clients: inline is probably the most reliable.

My recommendation is to email good, snappy TEXT-ONLY content, inviting 
them to click an included link to get the full info and formatting ...
