Sorry, but IE won't play ball - it needs those floats.

Some kind of float-based construction is your best option for now -
unless you want to absolute position everything and lose control when
visitors apply font-resizing and other browser-options.
A HTML table is of course also an option, if you think a table is the
right element for your stuff.
