I've seen many references to the trick of setting maximum width on IE 6 
and older using an expression(...) value for width. The details vary in 
the descriptions of this trick, but the common way is something like

expression(this.width > 300 ? "300px" : this.width)

For some odd reason, I cannot make this work. Demo:

The problem might be this.width, but what's wrong with it and how to 
replace it? (I know this is strictly speaking a JScript issue rather than 
CSS, but the trick is part of common CSS netlore.)
