I don't see the problem... the 'gradient' appears behind the 'wrapper' 
as specified in your html & css. Do you have a test case where this 
didn't work?
Now if you wanted the 'gradient' on top of the 'wrapper' (which is the 
reverse of what you say you want) then you need to reverse the z-index.
