After reading this list for a few weeks and trying out many of the ideas and suggestions, I conclude that CSS for layout purposes is just not ready for prime time, as opposed to using it for fonts, colors, sizes, etc., for which it is extremely suitable.
There are still too many browser work-arounds and bugs to make it worth the effort. I guess I'll just have to continue with tables for the time being.
