ok, i answered my own question.

i used this approach:

Text to be
replaced

I then gave the a background image, and on hover, adjusted the
background position to show the hover state. And finished by giving the
a display:block; and text-indent:-9999px;

granted, i haven't yet checked in the evil IE twins, 6 and 7, but all is
well in firefox and safari. i would think that technique is not really
so far-out and crazy that it wouldn't work.

thanks!

Subject: [css-d] Image replacement with hover effect, not in a nav
        list

hi -

i keep coming across this issue, and i can't seem to find anything in a
google search ...

i want to replace text with an image, and have the image change its
background position on hover, but it's not part of a navlist - it's
either placed under a
or floated next to a
.

somehow, my brain doesn't know how to approach this if it's not part of
a navlist. i keep thinking that if i wrap the hyperlink in an and
move it off the screen, then apply a background image to, say, a
,
how does the background position of one element change when you hover
over the other?

or, if i place the background image on the , in order to take
advantage of the hover property to move the background position, do i
then have to use a to contain the text and move it off the
screen? i usually avoid the IR method involving s, but maybe this
is just the way to do this technique, i don't know.

i am probably thinking about it all wrong, or making it more complicated
than it really is...

can someone point me to a link, if you have one, that might address this
specific issue? all i've been able to find is regarding navigation lists.

thanks in advance!

jen
