Your test with paddings fails on two points: 1: padding is added to dimensions. 2: at least two actual _positions_ must be used for a 'position: absolute' positioned element to "land" where it's supposed to under those conditions. So, you image is too small, and the span ends up in being positioned by the padding on the h3, instead of overlapping it as it should.
