I'd use a background color (#006) on the DIV that wraps the h1 *with* a
background image (all white).
So it would be (from back to front):
1. background color dark
2. background image white
3. background image gradient (the gradient sits on a white background)
4. color white

With images off, you end up with:
1. background color dark
4. color white

Does that make sense?
