this happens a lot in IE6. i think it's because it increases padding on floated items, described here: http://www.positioniseverything.net/explorer/doubled-margin.html which means there isn't enough room for both divs so the second div drops down. i may be wrong - and if i am it won't take long before i'm corrected :)
