I see. I hadn't noticed that before. I think part of the problem might be that you have the display parameter in the mainlevel-nav class set to "block". If my understanding of CSS is correct, "block" ensures that there is a line break before and after the element.
What I would suggest you do is that you modify that parameter from "block" to "inline" and that you also remove the class properties from the links and insert them into the <li> tags. I'll start looking at the new problem now.
