Georg, thank you for a well reasoned discussion.

I was beginning to wonder whether connection speed might have something to do
with image rendering, and you've just confirmed my suspicions. It's a crazy
world out there, where images may render correctly or not, depending on the
time of day and the number of DSL users! :-)

OK, it looks as if I will have to 'bite the bullet' and define a size in a
separately named <div> for each image. IE6 won't go away and the images will
always be of varying size, so I will have to stop being lazy. :-)

As far as expanding #main is concerned, I tried your suggestion and it does
indeed afford a great improvement, but unfortunately it's not quite perfect -
yet. :-)
I just realised that the images themselves - #imgl and #imgr were not floats,
so I've set them to be so and they now obey the top and bottom margins.
Now #main does expand to contain the images, but it is ignoring .imgcentered
{top-margin: 50px}. I guess that's because .imgcentered is not a float and has
left and right margins set to auto. Also, on the 'Events Diary' the browsers
(not IE) now chop the bottom of the table. I wonder if the same fix will cure
both problems? I guess I need to do some work on re-formatting the table defs.

Still, nearly there. If I can only sort out that dang pop-up/down menu block in
IE6, I can teak a break. <g>

Regards,

Alan.

  IE6 (and older) can't auto-size images reliably. Locally all images will
  be loaded so fast that there won't be a problem, but IE6 will "time out"
  on most connections, and the more images IE6 has to handle the more
  it'll mess up.

  There's no real cure other than to force a re-rendering _after_ loading
  is completed. A script can probably handle that ... or you can tell
  visitors to try to resize text (even though you've used a fixed font-size).

  Since "auto" means "intrinsic size" in your case, you can just delete
  "auto" and let IE6 try to detect the real image-size.
  Adding real width/height values for each image in the markup, will of
  course work best.

  Make #main "expand to contain floats" by adding...

  #main {
  overflow: hidden;
  }

  ...and those browsers will behave as intended.
