    Believe it or not:

      li:before { content: counters(list, ".") ". " }

    Note the dot I added to the second bit of quoted text.  This 
worked for me (with nested lists as well as top-level list items) in 
several browsers.  Not IE7 or earlier, of course.  Didn't test in IE8.
