It could help to:

1/  Browsers understand compressed CSS files: no question about that. 
But when seeking assistance, decompressing the CSS, and validating the 
CSS2.1 CSS, prior to writing the list is always to your advantage.
2/  All browsers, and particularly IE 6/7 have a particularly difficult 
time, when attempting to load invalid markup; and, although this may not 
have anything directly to do with causing the problem you wrote about, 
it is always to your advantage to at least take a stab at correcting at 
least some of the 160 html errors.
3/ Re-read On Having Layout [1]: the specific answer to your question 
lies somewhere in that document and may become more apparent to you. If 
not, please do write back...
