One other possible reason for the difference in rendering across platforms could be the technique of font smoothing used. With embedded fonts, I find that the smoothing is superior in Ubuntu. In Windows XP - 7 the fonts are much more jagged. However, this could have something to do with the quality of the font, ie the hinting that is built in to it.
