I'm thinking (accurately or not :) that an 8-bit PNG offers translucency (if that's the right word) if the original file has it. With a smaller file size than 24-bit. Right? Applicable?

An 8-bit PNG is somewhat like a "refined GIF" - transparency is "on/off".
