Sprites should definitively not be used for content images (depending on how 
big your content images are, thing would balloon in size like there is no 
tomorrow. And send the browser memory usage through the roof (the browser 
decompress the images, don't forget…).

So yeah, eventually good for small icons and the like, that are used repeatedly 
all over the site. As for the size, bear in mind the above about browser memory 
usage, and then your ability to keep track of them. All depends on your target 
audience, targeted devices, etc.

(I've in front of me a sprite for Jquery UI. It is a grid of 16 by 16 
monochrome images, ~5kb png. That whole Jquery UI css is a seriously bloated 
mess. Been busy rewriting it for my needs).
