Well, after some more thought away from my desk, I've gone back the other way and am choosing show/hide of images in the HTML. Normally when we've done large-width bg images, they are just decorative and can crop, re-size etc without too much concern as to what's showing. The images in question with this project are actual content (designed header images with some copy) so I need to make sure they always look right and display in their entirety (not to mention have an alt attribute, and can be made to link to home page easily, etc.) so they need to be in the markup. Using max-width:100% on images in the HTML feels best for this - though I know show/hide has it's issues, I think in this case they are negligible. There are only 2 cases where this occurs and I optimize my images.
