I have one concern when designing a responsive site, should I, as primarily a designer but unlike many designers not restricted to design and know how to code, be wild with my design, or is there restrictions I should set on myself when designing ?

Restrict yourself to using the W3C standards for both - the HTML and CSS. Apart from this restrictions, you can do almost anything you feel like as long as the site is navigate-able and the information is easily available.
