Yes, whilst I consider this a rather futile attempt at styling the web (text should be resizable), your technique seems to be the best there. Use real text in the HTML and replace it with an image with text via CSS - after testing that images are supported.
You still run into the issues that the text cannot be resized, or copied and pasted without looking at the source or linked without adding even more CSS trickery, but as my mother kept saying "beauty must suffer".
