I set the first one because it is an autosave of a form in the background.
I set to none until it saves the form the the RAILS RJS show the span.

This is my CSS for the Spans:

#status, #autosave{
    border: 3px solid #9c9;
    background-color: #cfc;
    margin: 5px;
    padding: 5px;
    display: inline;
}

If I do not put the inline statement then the first span acts like a div and
takes up the whole length.  I am really baffled by this.
