The perl implementation of splitindex is still the primary one. It is recommended to use this, if perl is available. But there's a new TeXLua implementation of splitindex, splitindex.tlu and splitindex_main.tlu, that may be used, if perl is not available. Note, that splitindex.tlu is only a wrapper to splitindex_main.tlu, that makes it easier to install new version of splitindex in TEXMFLOCAL or TEXMFHOME.
