Hi everyone,
Andrea Provaglio (see andreaprovaglio.com) is giving a one day master
class on JRuby on 29 Jan 2008. The event is a collaborative effort
by
the Johannesburg Centre for Software Engineering (www.jcse.org.za)
and
the company that I work for, PBT Group (www.pbt.co.za).

I sat in on the JRuby workshop in Johannesburg yesterday and it was
very, very good. JRuby was exploded into the following main areas:
Relation to JSR-223 (Scripting api), Ruby the language (what duck-
typing gives us, etc.), JRuby on Rails and Domain Specific Languages
(well, internal DSL's with Ruby).

The build up was good ... started with Ruby for newbies. Built up to
calling Ruby from Java, and using Java classes in JRuby. Also went
into getting your RoR app running on Tomcat, etc. Moved on to DSL's
and then open Q 'n A. Also, discussed certain patterns that are dead
easy in Ruby as compared to Java, etc.

It's a very intimate session with lots of interaction. I would say
it's best for experienced Java developers.

Cost is R3000 payable to JCSE and you can register at www.jcse.org.za,
find the link to register from the home page.

BTW, Andrea worked very closely with Bruce Eckel for 4 years in
California. So, if you want to expand your network as well, here's an
opportunity.

Feel free to email me directly if you want to ask me more about the
event.

Regards,
Aslam
