Another posting to ALSC-L Amanda The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) is proud to announce a new initiative to increase public awareness of El da de los nios/El da de los libros: a celebration of children, families and reading. The association received a $50,000 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to produce and disseminate a brochure for parents featuring a booklist by and about Latinos. ALSC, a division of the ALA, also is collaborating with the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking (REFORMA) and the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) on this effort. El da de los nios/El da de los libros (Children's Day/Book Day) is observed annually on April 30. The celebration emphasizes the importance of advocating literacy for every child regardless of linguistic and cultural background. The celebration, established in 1997 by NABE, is cross-cultural and intergenerational. "April 30 is a day to celebrate the joys and wonders of childhood and the importance of books in our lives," said ALSC President Carole Fiore. "ALSC is proud to be part of this effort to increase the visibility of this event, and we're grateful to the Kellogg Foundation for their support." Free copies of the brochure will be available starting March 28 and will be mailed to ALSC, REFORMA and NABE members. In addition to the bilingual booklist for children primarily ages birth through eight years, the brochure also features tips for parents on how, when and why to read to very young children and ideas for encouraging reading in children ages 5 years and old. ALSC also will provide tips for librarians and other community service staff on using the brochure. The brochure and suggestions for El da de los nios/El da de los libros events can be found online at www.ala.org/alsc. -30- --------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, send to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Include in body: unsubscribe ctls-l For information on CTLS-L please visit: http://www.ctls.net/document/ctls-l.htm
