LIBRARIANS OPEN CASE AGAINST INTERNET FILTERING LAW

"The trial on the constitutionality of CIPA began in a Philadelphia
courtroom yesterday. Civil libertarians, scientists and librarians
presented arguments challenging the constitutionality of CIPA, a law
that requires public libraries and schools to use and install Internet
filtering software on their computers in order to qualify for millions
of dollars in federal funding. The librarians argued that the measure
requires them to abandon their traditional role of providing adult
patrons with access to lawful information
and materials in an atmosphere that safeguards individual privacy.
Members of the public were asked to leave the trial after the filtering
companies argued that confidential filtering techniques would be
publicly disclosed."
