Subject: library partnership with Project Vote Smart

Please forgive the cross-posting.

For those of you not yet familiar with Project Vote Smart,
I would encourage you to visit their website at www.vote-smart.org. They
have a wealth of information, easily accessed, that will be useful in
answering patrons' questions as we approach Nov. 5. Also linked on
their website is information pertaining to several ongoing programs to
supplement their mission.

One of these activities is their Smart Voting Libraries program.
Participating libraries distribute free materials from PVS, display
informational posters provided by PVS, and receive, at no charge, the
Reporter’s Source Book (RSB)and the Vote Smart Web Yellow Pages
(YP). The RSB “provides an overview of major national issues and
listings for hundreds of useful sources for journalists.” The YP
is a “comprehensive political website directory that indexes and
cross-references thousands of political governmental websites.”

In addition, PVS’s News Division would also work with
the Library to promote this service throughout the participating
libraries' communities.

Approximately 5000 national public libraries have already signed up for
this program. The deadline for sign-up for the 2002 election was August,
so it is too late for us for this election season. However, Mr. Collins
said it is ok to sign up now in preparation for 2004 and for an
off-season activity next year.

In the left hand frame toward the bottom of their home page
is a link to Library Partnerships. When you click on that, you'll see
another link to View the List of Our Library Partners.

I can't emphasize enough how helpful this website is in answering patron
questions.
