We are going to do a similar program here early next year. Lampasas' book is Elmer Kelton's THE TIME IT NEVER RAINED. This is a fictionalized account of the drought of the '50s and how it affected ranching in west Texas. Although Lampasas in not technically west Texas, it was a very hard time around here, too. Mr. Kelton is scheduled to make a presentation in Feb. to kick it off. I have contacted the Humanities Institute at UT to see if we can get someone to lead a discussion group in March. I think it is a pretty ambitious project for us, but the plans seem to be going well. The journalism students at HS are going to interview some local people to find out how it affected them and then the theatre students are supposed to present some sketches of the interviews. We will see how it all goes! The book APL is suggesting for the entire city of Austin to read is: Rudolfo Anaya's Bless Me, Ultima. I hope many of you have this in your collections. APL has acquired multiple pb copies. Good luck, and keep us posted if this generates interest in your community. There should be something on tonight's local newscasts.
