Great work on everyone's part! We still need more (ALA would like to have 300), and next Wednesday is the deadline for signing on. It's probably best for people to phone or fax their Congressional Representatives in Washington at this point, since mail is still much delayed by the screening process. The Congressional Representatives can sign on as co-sponsors by contacting Rebecca Hunt, staff to Congressman Pete Hoekstra, at (202) 225-4401. Republicans might be persuaded by the fact that President Bush has proposed a significant funding increase for LSTA in his just-released budget proposal for FY2004; and the argument can also be made to Representatives of smaller states that their funding will increase with the increased base allocation, which would be close to double the current amount if the new Act is in effect and if the final LSTA budget line equals or exceeds the President's request.
