Please help us spread the word by posting this announcement or passing it along to others who may be interested. Lee & Low Books, the award-winning publisher of multicultural books for children, is pleased to announce the fourth annual NEW VOICES AWARD. The Award will be given for a children�s fiction or nonfiction picture book story by a writer of color. The Award winner will receive a cash grant of $1,000 and our standard publication contract, including our standard advance and royalties. An Honor Award winner will receive a cash grant of $500. Lee & Low Books is one of the few publishing companies owned by people of color. We have published over fifty-five first time writers and illustrators. Titles include IN DADDY�S ARMS I AM TALL: AFRICAN AMERICANS CELEBRATING FATHERS, winner of the 1998 Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award; CRAZY HORSE�S VISION, an American Library Association Notable Book; and THE POT THAT JUAN BUILT winner of numerous awards. The contest is open to writers of color who are residents of the U.S. and who have not previously published a children�s picture book. 2. Writers who have published in other venues, such as children�s magazines, young adult fiction and nonfiction, or books for adults, are eligible. 3. Manuscripts previously submitted for this award or to Lee & Low Books are not eligible. Submissions: 1. Manuscripts should address the needs of children of color by providing stories with which they can identify and relate, and which promote a greater understanding of one another. Of special interest are stories with contemporary settings. 2. Submissions may be FICTION or NONFICTION for children ages 2 to 10. Folklore and animal stories will not be considered. 3. Manuscripts should be no more than 1,500 words in length and accompanied by a cover letter that includes the author�s name, address, phone number, a brief biographical note, relevant cultural and ethnic information, how the author heard about the award, and publication history, if any. 4. Manuscripts should be typed double-spaced on 8 1/2" x 11" paper. A self-addressed, stamped envelope with sufficient postage must be included for return of the manuscript. 5. Up to two submissions per entrant. Each submission should be submitted separately. 6. Manuscripts may not be submitted to other publishers while under consideration for this award. The publisher is not responsible for late, lost, or incorrectly delivered submissions. Dates for Submission: Manuscripts will be accepted from April 1, 2003, through October 31, 2003, and must be postmarked within that period. Announcement of the Award: 1. The Award and Honor Award winners will be selected no later than December 31, 2003. 2. All entrants will be notified in writing of our decision by January 31, 2004. 3. The judges are the editors of Lee & Low Books. The decision of the judges will be final. 4. At least one Honor Award will be given each year, but Lee & Low Books reserves the right not to choose an Award winner. 5.
