This was posted to the Association for Library Service to Children's
email dicussion list earlier today by the public information officer. I
looked at the www.rif.org/summer and thought there were some good ideas
for handouts for parents, etc.

Below I am re-posting the press release and entry form for a Summer
Reading campaign sponsored by RIF, Verizon and Scholastic.

They are still accepting applications from libraries.

Please note: This is not a separate, contained Summer Reading Program.
It is a suggested enhancement to existing summer programs.

Information on where to send the entry form is at the end of this

Reading Is Fundamental, Verizon, and Scholastic
Take A Summer Reading Journey!

Children acquire learning skills throughout the school year. But what
happens after schools close for the summer and children are no longer
engaged in educational activities? Research shows many children will
experience significant learning loss. To address this critical
educational problem, Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) is teaming up with
Verizon and Scholastic, this summer on a Summer Reading Journey, an
exciting national public awareness campaign to deliver summer reading
messages and resources directly to selected communities across the
country.

The effort, which is funded by Verizon, is set to launch in June, will
provide fun summer reading resources to 200 public libraries in
under-resourced urban and rural communities. The campaign will feature
Scholastic's The Magic School Bus, Ms. Frizzle of The Magic School Bus,
and Riffington, RIF's spokes-creature, as they remind children to keep
reading during summer vacation and encourage children and parents alike
to take a trip to their local library to discover the exciting world of
reading.

Reading Is Fundamental selected the libraries with support from the
American Library Association and Libraries for the Future. "We know that
children who read succeed, and RIF has been an outstanding partner for
libraries in bringing kids and books together," said ALSC President
Barbara Genco. "The summer is a critical time for maintaining that
connection, and we believe that the Summer Reading Journey is an
excellent way to keep kids reading and learning during these months."

"Libraries play an vital role in communities during the summer, said
Carol Rasco, President and CEO of Reading Is Fundamental. "In many
instances they are the only source of reading resources for children who
do not have access to books at home."

Each participating library will receive a Summer Reading Journey kit
complete with Verizon Literacy Champion activity posters featuring
Scholastic's The Magic School Bus; bookmarks; reading resource guide for
librarians, and a collection of books from Scholastic's The Magic School
Bus series. The materials are designed to keep kids motivated and
involved in reading and learning throughout the summer.

In June, the Summer Reading Journey poster and other great summer
reading resources will be available by visiting www.rif.org/summer. To

ENTRY FORM TO PARTICIPATE
In The RIF/Verizon Summer Reading Journey

Summer Reading Journey Materials are available for 200 libraries across
the country for the summer of 2003. The initiative is primarily a
communications and public awareness campaign to support summer reading
and encourage parents and children to visit their community library
regularly. Posters, Let's Read About activity resources and small book
collections of Scholastic's The Magic School Bus series are available to
participating libraries.

This initiative is intended to supplement any planned or existing summer
program, not supplant. The 200 libraries to be included in the project
will be selected by RIF and Verizon staff with an interest in
appropriate representation of urban/rural locations and as broad a
representation of states as possible.

The launch event will be in mid June, with resources delivered to
participating libraries shortly thereafter.
