I agree with Jennifer on this one. The fact that the library is promoting any one vendor, including the local financial advisor of a nationally known company, implies, if not outright states, an endorsement. If the group used your room with no endorsement or promotion from you, then no endorsement seems implied. However, like most libraries, your room use policy may not charge for room use, so the library has set into place restrictions on the types of use related to commercialism, religious services, etc. I remember one time that we cosponsored a financial advisor who "guaranteed" no pressure in promotion. I had a friend of mine, an IRS tax preparer, sit in. He told me that the man did endorse certain companies and approaches that made my friend uncomfortable. We seldom cosponsor any event where for-profit companies are involved. But our policies are rather unique-we charge EVERYONE, with for profits paying more than non-profits, so we don't get caught in this discussion. Been doing it for 8 years with no problems. Good luck. A local financial advisor from a nationally known company is doing a workshop here on the basics of investment, which will include topics such as understanding the stock market, planning for retirement, and saving for children's education. There is no charge for admission and no products sold during the presentation. The workshop is designed to have an expert in the field of investing educate the public. Attendees may or may not, at some point, choose to do business with that person. We have no intention of promoting him or his product. Also, a local CPA offered to do an informational workshop on taxes and changes in the upcoming tax season. Today a woman who owns a travel agency asked if she could use the room once in awhile to talk about travel possibilities. She usually has representatives from different companies, such as cruise lines or other tour groups talk about trips that are available as well as what to expect when traveling to different countries. She assures me that no attendee is asked or pressured to use the company hosting the presentation. She considers the presentation to be informational and educational. I'm feeling a little uncomfortable in allowing her to use the room because a particular product, e.g. Carnival Cruise Lines, is being presented. If she were to speak about traveling as a general subject and show slides of past trips while sharing stories about her experiences, I would feel better about approving the meeting. I would be interested in other opinions. Thanks in advance. Jan Steele Librarian/Director Lago Vista Community Library 5803 Thunderbird, Suite 40 Lago Vista, TX 78645 (512) 267-3868 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
